Red Sox Game 15 reaction: Bad players bad; media shocked

Highest WPA: Dustin Pedroia, .236 (2-5, HR, 2 RBI)
Lowest WPA: Joe Kelly, -.318 (5+ IP, 8 H, 5 ER, 7 K, BB, HR)

Dave O’Brien was shocked. Shocked. He made sure to let us all know, again and again and again, how very surprised he was by what he was seeing. Joe Kelly, a player who had an ERA+ of 91 last year, a player who has never in his life had a FIP below 4, fell apart! He pitched well through five innings, but then this happened:

Something like that could only make sense if Joe Kelly, who I will once again point out has literally never been good, was in fact not good. But he had ten wins and a shiny ERA one year, so he must be good. I guess. The shock only continued when Edward Mujica, who went from closer to mascot for one team and then got a two-year contract only to go from trusted set-up man to mascot (and backup closer, because saves) for another team, was also bad. Mujica had six whole somewhat decent innings this year; surely, that means he’s good! At least in the world of Dave O’Brien, who could not believe it when Mujica was, in fact, bad. Because Edward Mujica is bad. Just like Joe Kelly is bad. Just like most of the pitchers employed by the Boston Red Sox are bad. Just like Jon Lester, Cole Hamels, and Brandon McCarthy are not bad. In the world of Dave O’Brien, and anyone else who gets paid to carry water for the Red Sox, these are all shocking revelations.

SHANE VICTORINO WATCH: Speaking of players who are bad, Shane struck out and then got hit by a pitch. He went on to steal second, which, hey, that’s good, but then he got himself hurt and had to leave the game, bringing up tonight’s…

ALLEN CRAIG WATCH: Given yet another chance to show what he can do, Craig…did just that, going 0-2. He now has a .368 OPS on the season, after putting up a .594 OPS last year. This seems like a good time to point out that the Red Sox took on Craig’s salary, along with Joe Kelly, because they didn’t want to have John Lackey for the league minimum salary this year. Yep.
