Red Sox Game 52 recap: Damning with faint praise

Highest WPA: John Lackey, .293 (6 1/3 IP, 8 H, 9 K)
Lowest WPA: Brock Holt, -.090 (0-5, 2 K, 3 LOB)

A rebuttal to Goog’s comment on yesterday’s recap: the Red Sox have now done something the 2012 club didn’t do after July. Beyond that, a three-game winning streak is… not a huge deal, but it’s a hell of a lot better than a three-game losing streak, let alone a ten-game losing streak.

But hey, whether you think it’s a long season and the Sox could get back in this, or that they’re playing out the last four months with no real chance of a playoff game, the bottom line is that they’re a lot more fun to watch when you feel like they have a chance of not losing, so this week is far better than last.

While I’d like to see the offense start putting up big games regularly, the story tonight was John Lackey. Atlanta’s hits included a pair of doubles, but we’re getting near the point where I actually trust Lackey to put up a decent start any given game, and that’s huge given that 40% of the rotation has looked like AAA guys far out of their depth.

And speaking of AAA guys far out of their depth… Jackie Bradley Jr. has consecutive multi-hit games for the first time since April 8. Good for him. Another 6 weeks of games like that and I’ll stop assuming he’s a massive bust.
