Red Sox Game 27 Recap: That was unexpected

Highest WPA: John Lackey, .226 (8 IP, 6 H, 2 ER, 5 K, BB)
Lowest WPA: Xander Bogaerts, -.143 (0-3, BB, 2 K, 5 LOB)
Innings Pitched By A Rapist: 1
Rapes Committed: None (that we know of)

When Dustin Pedroia and David Ortiz combine to go 2-10, you don’t expect good things to happen. But, sometimes, they do. Sometimes AJ Pierzynski has a couple of hits, and sometimes Will Middlebrooks puts a ball off the Monster, and sometimes Jackie Bradley resembles a Major League talent and contributes as well. Tonight, all of those things happened. It doesn’t matter that they happened in 40-degree weather in front of what we’ll generously call 20,000 people; they still happened, and the Red Sox still won.

While those things were happening, John Lackey was having his second straight eight-inning outing. He didn’t strike out 11 guys this time, but he was still more than good enough to keep the Rays’ offense in check. Here’s hoping that Felix Doubront will be able to duplicate the feat tomorrow. In the interest of maintaining positivity in the wake of a satisfying win, I will refrain from commenting on Mr. Doubront’s chances.

In other news, Edward Mujica was bad. This isn’t actually news, but I figure that my life won’t be complete until I point out every little foible by every baseball player I dislike in any way, shape or form.
