Red Sox Game 23 Recap: I want to getaway

Highest WPA: Somebody, .not a lot
Lowest WPA: Felix Doubront, -.369 (2.2 IP, 6 H, 7 R, 3 ER, K, 2 BB, HR)

It all seemed so simple. CC Sabathia, struggling to adjust to his diminishing velocity, coming into Fenway Park, with Shane Victorino back in the lineup, coming off a night when the Yankee bullpen was forced to cover nearly the entire game? You don’t get many more favorable positions going up against the Yankees. But alas, CC was more than good enough, and Bad Felix Doubront showed up.

My dislike for Felix is well-known, and at times I’ve let it get in the way of a rational assessment of his talent. For a #5 starter on a team with playoff aspirations, he’s more than fine. But that doesn’t mean he’s infallible, and it certainly doesn’t mean he can’t look really, really bad every now and then.

Victorino or no, this offense can’t be asked to keep digging out of big holes, not as long as the likes of Brock Holt and Jackie Bradley are getting regular at-bats. One of them at least has the excuse of being an injury sub; the other is only still on the roster because he can play center field and because Daniel Nava’s struggles made him a convenient scapegoat. I wouldn’t be particularly thrilled with the thought of trusting Victorino and Sizemore to handle center and right field on an everyday basis, but at some point, something’s going to have to give.

We got Bad Felix, but I’ll point out that the defense is the main reason it was Awful, Not-Making-It-Through-Five Felix. Really, all around, we’re in one of those ruts where “not very good” parts of the team become “HOLY CRAP I AM VOMITING FROM WATCHING THIS” parts. And while I’m basically done holding out hope for JBJ – prove me wrong here; you’re still young! – it’s also worth pointing out that all the concerns about Xander Bogaerts’ defense at shortstop are starting to look pretty valid.

Too bad Stephen Drew got scooped up so quick, or I’d say we could ditch Middlebrooks and move Xander to third!

Well you know you just can’t predict baseball, John.
