Red Sox Game 5 Recap: Bullpen blues

Highest WPA: Brandon Workman, .314 (1 2/3 IP, H, 3 K)
Lowest WPA: Clay Buchholz, -.440 (4 1/3 IP, 13 H, 6 ER, 2 HR, 3 K)

This one was pretty ugly early, then it got better, and then… it got pretty ugly again.

Let’s call it an initiation ritual for the new relievers – Edward Mujica yesterday, Burke Badenhop today. I’m not particularly concerned about either, because relievers are just fickle, volatile entities.

I AM, however, pretty worried about a Clay Buchholz who looked awfully similar to the “um, is his arm going to fly off and hit a batter” junkballer of the World Series; I’m nauseated by A.J. Pierzynski adding terrible defense to his game; and I have some sort of PTSD where I wake up in a cold sweat screaming when I realize Jonathan Herrera is one injury – to any of three players! – away from being an everyday player.

So the 2014 Red Sox are a losing team. Hopefully, that’s the last time I have to say that.
