Red Sox Game 155 recap: From worst to first

Highest WPA: Jon Lester, .376 (7 IP, 5 H, 2 BB, 8 K, ER)
Lowest WPA: Jarrod Saltalamacchia, -.104 (2-4, K, 4 LOB, GIDP)

We didn’t blow it this time!

I’m not trying to commemorate tonight’s win with this blog’s usual snark and cynicism. Seriously, after 2011, I think all Red Sox fans were keenly aware that there’s a world of difference between “all but mathematically certain” and “officially clinched.” (Yes, in 2011, it was always a wildcard spot we had in our pocket/impossibly squandered, not the division, but that role meant twice as much in those days.)

As a fitting turnaround from two years ago, Jon Lester gets the win tonight; the man who took a lot of blame (some merited and plenty not) for the 2011 collapse has allowed just 6 earned runs (5 walks, no homers) in 30 innings this month (2011: 31 2/3 IP, 16 BB, 19 ER, 3 HR), and seems the likely starter for Game One of the ALDS. Surviving ’11 regulars Dustin Pedroia, David Ortiz, and Jarrod Saltalamacchia went a combined 6-11 tonight, but as it so often happens, it was under-the-radar pickup Mike Carp leading the RBI and offensive WPA charge, and the should’ve-closed-all-along Koji Uehara shutting down a Jays rally with a five-out save.

And yes, we’re just going to pretend that comparisons to 2011 are the way to go here, even though “worst to first” is based on 2012. What happened in 2012 isn’t even dramatic enough to be worth recounting. Look forward to it getting recounted when Bobby Valentine joins the TBS postseason crew!
