Red Sox Game 125 recap: Big Game John?

Highest WPA: John Lackey, .299 (6 2/3 IP, 6 H, 3 BB, 1 ER, 1 K)
Lowest WPA: Jarrod Saltalamacchia, -.080 (1-4, RBI, R, K, 5 LOB)

Maybe I’ve been overstating the importance of a series in mid-August, but if we take as truth the premise that this was a huge series… John Lackey came up huge. The righty was lucky, of course, working around walks and his own inability to control the running game (combined with Jarrod Saltalamacchia being, well, Jarrod Saltalamacchia), but he also kept the ball down, getting a staggering 17 ground balls to just 3 flies. When you can keep that many balls on the ground, well, at least you’re not gonna repeat the Doubront dud from game one.

On the offensive side, Will Middlebrooks continued undermining the calls (some of them my own!) for Xander Bogaerts. I think Middlebrooks is playing over his head right now, but unlike Goog, I’m now considering that he might be a good enough hitter that the Sox can afford to keep riding the hot streak until his second-half play loses him the job.

Oh, and let’s all be thankful for bad umpiring and poor decision making; the Sox didn’t end their terrible baserunning streak or offensive struggles entirely by their own merits. Between the blown call at third giving Mike Carp a steal and Lyle Overbay’s poor throw on a possible double play the preceding batter, the Sox were reminded that it’s better to be lucky than good. (I, for one, would like the offense to get back to being both.)
