Red Sox Game 123 preview: Believe in the ball, and throw yourself

Jake had really better throw himself into this one, because…wow.

1. CF Jacoby Ellsbury – .299/.358/.429 (.345 wOBA)
2. RF Shane Victorino – .284/.336/.409 (.326)
3. 2B Dustin Pedroia – .290/.372/.403 (.343)
4. DH David Ortiz – .327/.408/.586 (.416)
5. LF Jonny Gomes – .238/.343/.435 (.340)
6. SS Stephen Drew – .248/.333/.429 (.333)
7. C Ryan Lavarnway – .268/.311/.375 (.302)
8. 1B Daniel Nava – .283/.370/.416 (.347)
9. 3B Will Middlebrooks – .206/.246/.399 (.279)

SP Jake Peavy – 92 IP, 83 K, 20 BB, 17 HR; 4.50 ERA (96 ERA+)
4.32 FIP, 3.79 xFIP, 4.65 tERA, 3.65 SIERA

Mark Buehrle is like a rich man’s Bruce Chen, and the Red Sox didn’t exactly do very well when they faced him. Tossing this lineup out there to face Buehrle is…well, it doesn’t exactly seem like John Farrell is all that concerned with throwing everything he has out there in a desperate attempt to salvage a .500 record on what looked on the outset like a fairly easy roadtrip. And maybe there’s a reason for that; after all, tomorrow night the Sox are back in Boston for just three games (against the suddenly surging Yankees), after which they fly cross-country with no off day to take on the Giants and a team that wouldn’t be any good had the Sox not handed them two borderline all-stars for less than nothing.

But I digress. There’s a baseball game tonight. Mark Buehrle is a fine pitcher, but he’s no worldbeater. He better bring it.

    All-Star = fourth-to-sixth best 1B in his league? That’s a… wide borderline.

All-Star = sixth-to-eight best LF in his league? That’s… do you know what an All-Star is?

Strong words from the man who couldn’t find room for Manny Machado on his all-star team.
