Red Sox Game 119 preview: Deck chairs

No, I’m not saying that the Red Sox are the Titanic. But the third base situation might as well be, and taking out Brandon Snyder just to go back to Will Middlebrooks? Deck chairs.

1. CF Jacoby Ellsbury – .299/.361/.432 (.347 wOBA)
2. RF Shane Victorino – .287/.335/.415 (.330)
3. 2B Dustin Pedroia – .293/.374/.408 (.346)
4. DH David Ortiz – .333/.412/.593 (.420)
5. LF Mike Carp – .302/.361/.562 (.394)
6. 1B Mike Napoli – .253/.345/.445 (.345)
7. C Jarrod Saltalamacchia – .265/.334/.449 (.340)
8. SS Stephen Drew – .252/.339/.436 (.338)
9. 3B Will Middlebrooks – .192/.228/.389 (.266)

SP Felix Doubront – 124 IP, 112 K, 51 BB, 8 HR; 3.56 ERA (118 ERA+)
3.41 FIP, 3.82 xFIP, 4.01 tERA, 3.98 SIERA

Been a while since you saw Middlebrooks’ line, hasn’t it? You forgot just how bad he really was, didn’t you? Well, don’t worry; he wasn’t much better at Pawtucket. A line of .268/.327/.464 would be fine at the bigs, but given the whole “major league pitching is better” thing it probably won’t translate into acceptable results at the big league level. Now, to Will’s credit, he’s been riding a nice little eleven-game hitting streak (during which time he drew two walks!!!), and it’s at least conceivable that big league pitchers have just forgotten that he swings at literally everything and can only hit fastballs over the plate. Or, hey, maybe he just gets lucky. I mean, Jose Iglesias still has a .762 OPS for the season, for crying out loud! Hey, speaking of which…

IGLESIAN REGRESSION WATCH: He finally snapped it! Wednesday night he went 1-2 and then got replaced, raising his OBP to .361 and stopping the 25-game streak of seeing it go down. During that stretch he hit .167/.191/.200, which is probably not quite as bad as Will Middlebrooks is going to be.
