Red Sox Game 116 recap: Garbage Demp

Highest WPA: Stephen Drew, .660 (2-4, BB, HR, 3 RBI)
Lowest WPA: Ryan Dempster, -.302 (6 IP, 7 K, 7 H, 5 ER, HR)
Highest BAC: Drake Britton, .018 (a couple beers; pinch-running burns the calories!)

In Ryan Dempster’s defense: it took him thrice as long as yesterday’s pitchers to give up five runs. Not in his defense: four extra base hits to the Astros; everything since April.

But once again, the offense got us back into what had been an ugly game, with Mike Carp and Jonny Gomes combining for a two-out two-run rally in the 7th. In the 9th, we got to see Drunk Britton, renowned for his 111 miles per hour speed, pinch-run for David Ortiz, Gomes draw his third walk of the night, and then… well, Stephen Drew being awesome.

Meanwhile, Chris Archer left his start with forearm tightness (allegedly a precautionary move), and the Diamondbacks lead the Rays by three. Boy, when it’s done right, second-half baseball is fun. Four divisional races are within 5 games, and eight teams are within that distance of the wildcard game. But I should stop gushing before I make an unpaid endorsement for any of MLB’s out-of-market packages.
