Red Sox Game 111 recap: Mashing Cody Ross

Highest WPA: Stephen Drew, .470 (2-2, HR, BB, 3 RBI, SF)
Lowest WPA: Jon Lester, -.413 (4 1/3 IP, 11 H, 6 K, HR, 6 ER)

Well, we reaped the benefits of Cody Ross (albeit during a meaningless trainwreck of a self-sabotaged season), so I guess I can’t complain that much about suffering his 4-hit, 9-total-base outburst. The 32-year-old outfielder has seen an 18-point drop in his OPS (114 to 96) since leaving the Red Sox, so I’m also not going to complain about his departure (like he did).

Instead, I will complain about Jon Lester. I was hard on the one-time ace early in the year, but then started to come around with some recent flashes of brilliance (3.13 ERA and 3.38 xFIP in July). And hey, maybe he’ll be fine and this is a bump in the road. But when a guy gives up five doubles and a homer, it’s tough to see anything but “really, really bad.” But momentum’s only as good as your next day’s starter, and well, we at The Sporting Nerds were already eager to see Jake Peavy’s debut. Let’s just hope his fly balls end up dying in right field, or the Seattle sweep is going to feel like a distant memory…
