Red Sox Game 110 recap: Steven Wright facts

...wow.

Highest WPA: Jonny Gomes, .367 (1-1, BB, RBI)
Lowest WPA: Ryan Dempster, -.299 (6 IP, 9 H, HR, 5 BB, 6 K, 7 ER)

Steven Wright has two major league wins.

They were both in 8-7 wins over the Mariners in relief of Ryan Dempster in a 7-run start.

That’s really something.

Also really something: RYAN DEMPSTER GAVE UP SEVEN RUNS TO THE MARINERS. TWICE. IN ONE SEASON. WITH LESS THAN A MONTH BETWEEN THOSE OUTINGS.

Funner facts:

  • Jonny Gomes has actually become an above-average (102 OPS+) hitter thanks to strong June and July showings. Could we be looking at a third month of hot hitting? I’m not betting on it, but since he’s actually been hitting righties, who knows?
  • Ryan Lavarnway got a start in this series! Inexplicably, it was not against the lefty, but I’ll take the 2-4, especially if it means a shorter leash on Jarrod Saltalamacchia’s slumps.
  • If you think Ryan Dempster has had enough of these matchups, consider Tom Wilhelmsen’s year against Boston: in three games, he’s recorded 7 outs. Somehow between notching four strikeouts, he has also allowed 5 hits, 6 walks (exactly 2 in each game!), and 7 earned runs. Get this guy on the Rays somehow.
  • The Diamondbacks had to use lefty Tony Sipp for a 31-pitch inning tonight. I’m guessing that newly-acquired second lefty Joe Thatcher makes his American League debut tomorrow night. Let’s hope for a warm welcome.
