Red Sox Game 98 preview: BASEBALL!!! (and extreme pessimism)

Finally! Thank whatever deity you like, baseball is BACK! We can now return to our regular programming: Me telling you why this first-place team is doomed.

1. CF Jacoby Ellsbury – .305/.368/.422 (.345 wOBA)
2. RF Shane Victorino – .290/.337/.404 (.326)
3. 2B Dustin Pedroia – .316/.396/.436 (.365)
4. DH David Ortiz – .317/.402/.606 (.418)
5. 1B Mike Napoli – .259/.343/.448 (.344)
6. LF Jonny Gomes – .236/.330/.402 (.322)
7. C Jarrod Saltalamacchia – .266/.341/.453 (.344)
8. 3B Brandon Snyder – .250/.280/.458 (.319)
9. SS Jose Iglesias – .367/.417/.461 (.385)

SP Felix Doubront – 99 IP, 93 K, 43 BB, 8 HR; 3.91 ERA (110 ERA+)
3.63 FIP, 3.91 xFIP, 4.19 tERA, 3.99 SIERA

  • First of all, Clay Buchholz is still hurt. This is shocking, I’m sure.
  • In other “knock me over with a feather” news, Andrew Bailey is also hurt. Given that Junichi Tazawa has one of those giant countdowns you see on bombs in movies on his right shoulder, this means that the decent relievers in the Red Sox bullpen are Koji and the lefties.
  • In more small-picture news, Felix Doubront is starting today because it makes total sense to position your second-worst starter to make the most starts as you push for the playoffs. It’s not like we just had four days off and could easily start our actual best pitcher, or the guy who’s had the best results over 5/8 of a season, or the guy we signed when it turned out Anibal Sanchez wanted good-player money.
  • Speaking of good players, Jose Iglesias and Brandon Snyder are not. Also Will Middlebrooks is 4 for his last 34 at Pawtucket, and probably wasn’t that good to begin with.
  • Matt Garza’s about to be traded, and the Red Sox aren’t that interested in him, because heaven forbid we move any of our precious prospects to improve a team that’s going to be notably worse next season than it is now.
  • “Koji and the Lefties” would be a great name for a band. They should have plenty of time to get that started by the second week of October.
