Red Sox Game 85 preview: Oh, right, this is a thing

Off days are the worst. Just the absolute worst.

1. CF Jacoby Ellsbury – .296/.361/.405 (.335 wOBA)
2. RF Shane Victorino – .291/.341/.393 (.323)
3. 2B Dustin Pedroia – .322/.401/.443 (.368)
4. DH David Ortiz – .317/.404/.604 (.418)
5. 1B Mike Napoli – .261/.344/.438 (.340)
6. LF Jonny Gomes – .218/.322/.374 (.307)
7. C Jarrod Saltalamacchia – .262/.328/.453 (.340)
8. 3B Brandon Snyder – .333/.333/.500 (.357)
9. SS Jose Iglesias – .409/.455/.530 (.428)

SP John Lackey – 78.1 IP, 73 K, 17 BB, 10 HR; 2.99 ERA (145 ERA+)
3.62 FIP, 3.24 xFIP, 4.14 tERA, 3.28 SIERA

It’s been established before that Jonny Gomes and Jarrod Saltalamacchia should never be in the lineup at the same time, and tonight’s starter for the Padres is…who the Hell is Robbie Erlin? Baseball Reference says he’s a lefty, so it’s Salty who should probably be riding the pine. Then again, maybe there’s some unwritten rule that says your starting catcher turns to dust if he doesn’t play for more than two consecutive days. That had better be the case, because it’s not like he’s tearing the cover off the ball; dude has 25 strikeouts in his last 58 plate appearances, and in that time he’s posted a .485 OPS. That’s…bad.

Speaking of bad, this is day four of Stephen Drew being completely unavailable and “forcing” the Red Sox to carry two worthless infielders and also Jose Iglesias. This has already “forced” the team to cut a semi-worthwhile pitcher loose, “forced” the stupidest bunt in the history of baseball, and today it has “forced” career nothing Brandon Snyder into the starting lineup. This is better than just putting Drew on the DL and calling up Will Middlebrooks (.992 OPS at AAA, since you asked) because…um…
