Red Sox Game 74 recap: Jonny Be Good (if you like infield hits)

Highest WPA: Jonny Gomes, .167 (2-4, 2 RBI, 2 K)
Lowest WPA: Daniel Nava, -.171 (0-4, K, GIDP, 2 LOB)

Well, that was a buzzkill. The Red Sox felt pretty invincible thanks to winning a doubleheader started by Aceves and Doubront and ended by a walkoff homer and helmet-punt (not that I condone such excessive celebration). But they are, well, vincible.

Contrary to popular belief, the Rays have a good offense, and perhaps it was just a matter of time before they broke through with a back-breaking inning as they did in the seventh. It is troubling, though, that Craig Breslow has joined Andrew Bailey (and Stephen Drew, and Clay Mortensen) in the “struggling former A’s” contingent. Maybe that’s just the price one pays to get a few good ABs out of Jonny Gomes (you know, on top of the $10 million already committed to that goal).
