Red Sox Game 69 recap: Going down

Highest WPA: Ryan Dempster, .053 (7 2/3 IP, 5 H, 5 BB, 4 K, 2 ER, HR)
Lowest WPA: Will Middlebrooks, -.169 (0-3, 4 LOB)

When your only players with hits are Shane Victorino and Jose Iglesias, you’ve had a pretty bad game. Not much to say here; the Red Sox just didn’t drive in runners when they had them (Chris Tillman issued four walks to three strikeouts). With an exhausted bullpen, John Farrell decided to let a tiring Dempster walk two guys in the eighth before Koji Uehara struck out J.J. Hardy on three pitches to end the threat. And then, as the tying run, Jose Iglesias grounded into a game-ending double play, just to mess with anyone who was getting optimistic about him thanks to a double and bunt hit.

John Lackey faces Freddy Garcia tomorrow. Hopefully, Lackey keeps imitating a much younger version of himself and Garcia reminds the Red Sox offense that they’re actually really good.
