Red Sox Game 49 preview: Walking wounded

Three injury transactions, and they’re all good news? That almost makes up for the fact that John Lackey’s starting.

1. CF Jacoby Ellsbury – .249/.317/.338 (.293 wOBA)
2. RF Daniel Nava – .299/.400/.493 (.382)
3. 2B Dustin Pedroia – .330/.417/.426 (.372)
4. DH David Ortiz – .351/.395/.640 (.435)
5. 1B Mike Napoli – .263/.343/.492 (.360)
6. C Jarrod Saltalamacchia – .258/.341/.467 (.352)
7. LF Mike Carp – .277/.333/.596 (.391)
8. SS Stephen Drew – .212/.314/.364 (.299)
9. 3B Wait, Jose Iglesias is back? Maybe it’s not all good news – .450/.476/.550 (.449)

SP John Lackey – 32.2 IP, 32 K, 8 BB, 3 HR; 3.31 ERA (134 ERA+)
3.11 FIP, 3.23 xFIP, 3.73 tERA, 3.29 SIERA

  • Shane Victorino, Will Middlebrooks and Ryan Lavarnway are gone; first two to the DL, Lavarnway to Pawtucket because David Ross is back.
  • Iglesias, Ross and Alfredo Aceves are back up.
  • In case you thought that maybe, just maybe, Iglesias had turned a corner and figured out some way to hit well enough to justify regular playing time, I will now post his 2013 AAA batting line (133 PA): .202/.262/.319
  • John Lackey’s inevitable regression could well start tonight; call me crazy, but I don’t think that he can continue having his best ERA since 2007 (or his best FIP since 2005, or his best xFIP and SIERA of his career) for a full season.
  • Mike Carp is 0 for his last 22, which accounts for like 40% of his plate appearances this season, and he still has a .929 OPS. That’s stupid. Stop being so awesome, Mike Carp. (Actually, no, don’t.)
