Red Sox Game 30 preview: Run to home base (and other things Shane Victorino can’t do)

1. CF Jacoby Ellsbury – .286/.338/.405
2. RF Shane Victorino – .289/.353/.316
3. 2B Dustin Pedroia – .304/.405/.357
4. DH David Ortiz – .465/.489/.837
5. 1B Mike Napoli – .274/.325/.573
6. LF Daniel Nava – .289/.396/.536
7. C Jarrod Saltalamacchia – .222/.309/.417
8. 3B Will Middlebrooks – .193/.233/.394
9. SS Stephen Drew – .186/.290/.322

SP John Lackey – 10.1 IP, 12 K, 3 BB, 1 HR; 2.61 ERA, 2.81 FIP, 2.38 xFIP

In 87 plate appearances, Shane Victorino has two extra base hits, both doubles. What follows is an abridged list of players with as many or fewer PA, and as many or more extra bases:

  • Marlon Byrd – 85 PA, 12 extra bases (5 2B, 3B, 2 HR)
  • Mike Aviles – 55 PA, 8 extra bases (2 2B, 2 HR)
  • Mike Carp – 31 PA, 14 extra bases (5 2B, 2 3B, 2 HR)
  • Pedro Ciriaco – 26 PA, 3 extra bases (2B, 3B)
  • Tim Hudson – 15 PA, 4 extra bases (2B, HR)
  • Clayton Kershaw – 8 PA, 4 extra bases (2B, HR)

And so on.

I like how power is super-important when Shane Victorino lacks it, but on-base skills are so much more the key when we’re talking about why Jarrod Saltalamacchia sucks.

If Victorino had on-base skills beyond “slap at the ball and get lucky,” this discussion wouldn’t be happening. A .338 BABIP is unsustainable, both for Shane (career .297, and most of that was when he was good), and for just about any singles hitter with less power than your typical pitcher. The only way Victorino can keep this up is if he’s turned into Ichiro, and him doing that is about as likely as Ichiro actually turning into a slugger.
