Red Sox Game 20 preview: Ace in the hole

We’ve seen Allen Webster. We know that he can, at least, be competent. We also know, just from watching baseball for most of our lives, that pitchers are inevitably going to get hurt, and that because of that it’s best to get as much out of them as you possibly can when they’re at all Major League ready. What I’m getting at is this: This should be Aceves’ last start. Sadly, I don’t think it will be.

1. CF Jacoby Ellsbury – .294/.333/.459
2. RF Shane Victorino – .308/.378/.323
3. 2B Dustin Pedroia – .292/.407/.319
4. 1B Mike Napoli – .278/.321/.570
5. LF Daniel Nava – .320/.429/.600
6. 3B Will Middlebrooks – .181/.211/.417
7. C Jarrod Saltalamacchia – .212/.293/.462
8. DH Jonny Gomes – .172/.368/.241
9. SS Stephen Drew – .121/.237/.152

SP Alfredo Aceves – 14.1 IP, 11 K, 8 BB, 5 HR; 6.28 ERA, 7.69 FIP, 4.62 xFIP

  • Gomes and Saltalamacchia should never be in the same lineup. Even if the team’s being extra careful with Ortiz, which I understand, Mike Carp should be the guy getting starts against righthanded pitching.
  • Speaking of righties: Standard complaint about Victorino batting second against pitchers he can’t hit goes here.
  • Steven Wright’s been up for a week, now, and hasn’t gotten into a single game. Here’s to the hope that Ace gets blasted early and we get to see some knuckleballs.

Yep, Goog is advocating for the value of a Red Sox prospect! And what’s more, I’m actually inclined to say Webster should get more seasoning at AAA and there’s no need to rush him. We’re living in strange times, people.
