Red Sox Game 17 recap: Oh, right, that’s why I didn’t like this team’s chances this year

Split?

Highest WPA: David Ortiz, .202 (3-4, RBI)
Lowest WPA: Jarrod Saltalamacchia, -.274 (0-4, K, and ohbytheway he let a runner steal second)

Ryan Dempster wasn’t bad, I guess, but he certainly wasn’t very good. Jonny Gomes played against a righty, and was about as bad as you could have imagined. Stephen Drew still hasn’t gotten into the swing of things, and he’s got me wondering if he will before we pull the plug on him and hand the job back to Jose Iglesias. (Worse yet, he’s got me thinking that that might not be the worst idea in the world.) And then there’s Jarrod Saltalamacchia, whose 0-4 day drops his OBP down to .286, just two points lower than what it was each of the last two seasons. When you play a position that places an extreme emphasis on defense, are a terrible defender, and your only two skills are walking and occasionally hitting for power, maybe–just maybe–you shouldn’t be starting on a team that pretends to have playoff aspirations.
