Red Sox Game 16 recap: This is our FUCKING city!

Never in doubt.

Highest WPA: Daniel Nava, .465 (1-2, BB, HR, 3 RBI)
Lowest WPA: David Ortiz, -.125 (2-4, RBI, GIDP)

The importance of sports after a disaster can often be overstated. The Saints’ Super Bowl win, for example, didn’t really do anything to alleviate the problems that plagued and continue to plague New Orleans post-Katrina. But sports do have a place, as a distraction and as a unifying force, and sometimes they can generate really cool moments that will be a part of local history for a long time to come. Daniel Nava’s two-out, three-run home run that wound up winning today’s game is one of those really cool moments.

(We can just ignore Nava’s boneheadedness helping kill a rally in the 7th, or Andrew Bailey nearly blowing the lead in the ninth. For today, at least.)

Clay Buchholz is still really really good, which is nice. Hopefully tomorrow one of Doubront or Dempster can come close to replicating his performance.

Well, here’s something interesting: Ryan Dempster will pitch in game one tomorrow, and then Allen Webster will make his major league debut in game two. The conspiracy theorist in me wonders if this is an audition of sorts for the Sox’ top pitching prospect; if Lackey’s “bicep strain” is worse than is being reported, could we want him to take Alfredo Aceves’ spot in the rotation? I guess we’ll find out.
