The Red Sox have almost signed Mike Napoli (again).

So the news finally came down today, the Red Sox will sign Mike Napoli to a one-year deal worth a guaranteed $5 million.  This is way, way down from the originally reported deal, which was for three years and $39 million. However, with incentives the value of this contract could reach $13 million, the annual value of the original deal.

Apparently Napoli’s hip was enough of a sticking point between the two sides to drag the negotiations out this long. The good news is, the team got him anyway and didn’t lose a draft pick in this mess because Texas never made him a qualifying offer even though the two sides had been talking about a contract. The better news is that we didn’t wind up with Adam LaRoche or (shudder) Lyle Overbay in all this mess, and we got our original target at a relatively cheap price. So rejoice! Our long regional nightmare is (almost) over.
