Game 33 1/3 Recap: The Final Insult.

On April 13th, 2012, the Red Sox began their home schedule with high hopes for the future. Eighty-two games later, the team has their worst home record since 1961. What can I say? First we had a long ceremony to honor the best Red Sox players of the last century or so, then they lost to a franchise with less than fifteen seasons to its record. Jon Lester looked good for four innings, very good. Then he suddenly collapsed and gave up the two home runs that ultimately cost Boston the game. The Sox offense was almost nonexistent against the Rays’ pitching, as they were last night, and they ended the home portion of Fenway Park’s 100th season by going down without that much of a fight.

So that’s it. The Rays continue clinging to a playoff berth while the Red Sox stagger away from a home season that was presented as a celebration of the team but ended up being a disaster on almost every count. Now all that’s left is to possibly mess up the divisional race between Baltimore and New York. Or maybe get swept in both series and have nothing to do with the final outcome. It’s all up in the air.
