40 Guys in 30 Days: Jose Iglesias

The next time someone tries to tell you that Bobby Valentine was a good choice to manage the Red Sox, remind them that he wanted Jose Iglesias to be his starting shortstop this year.

Jose Iglesias
2012 stats: MLB: 25 PA, .091/.167/.136
AAA: 396 PA, .266/.318/.306
2013 contract status: $2 million

It took a BABIP-driven .799 OPS in the month of August for Iglesias to get up to that lofty batting line you see there. He’s still just 22, but he’s had over 750 plate appearances at Pawtucket and remains completely unable to hit. It doesn’t matter how good his defense is; there’s no way he can hit Major League pitching right now, and the Red Sox aren’t doing him any favors by having him flail pathetically at AAA pitchers.

Hopefully, common sense will prevail, and the Red Sox will either trade Iglesias or demote him. Sadly, I think it’s much more likely that they still consider him to be part of the future; either he’ll be on the bench as a pinch runner and defensive replacement out of Spring Training, or he’ll–gulp–replace Mike Aviles as the starting shortstop, thereby becoming the worst regular player in the Major Leagues.

Next time: I promise I’ll have more interesting things to say about…Ryan Kalish? Fuuuuuuuck.
