Game 124 recap: I loathe LA.

Highest WPA: Mike Aviles, .088
Lowest WPA: Clay Buccholz. -.288

Another game where things just sort of petered out and collapsed on the Red Sox in the mid innings. The starter wasn’t very good and the team didn’t score many runs. Clay actually tied a career high tonight in giving up twelve hits, and when he left in the sixth the bullpen let a few added runners score. I guess you could blame the team’s low walk rate on the bare-bones, minimalistic OBPs of characters like Mike Aviles and Pedro Ciriaco, guys who look hot when they randomly begin making contact and then collapse as soon as the contact inevitably vanishes. But I would probably need to be some sort of super-fancy baseball guy to tell you for sure, and lord knows that as a nerd with someone else’s blog I’m not qualified to make observations like that. And Jered Weaver is a good pitcher too, right? So we can forget that this game went almost exactly like every other game this August and for most of the season really.
