Game 124 preview: Remember that thing I said wouldn’t happen?

That thing where, because Ellsbury’s healthy, Podsednik wouldn’t lead off? Yeah, it’s happening.

1. Scott Podsednik LF – .356/.380/.448
2. Jacoby Ellsbury CF – .250/.301/.349
3. Dustin Pedroia 2B – .276/.331/.422
4. Adrian Gonzalez 1B – .304/.349/.478
5. Cody Ross RF – .272/.339/.518
6. Jarrod Saltalamacchia C – .229/.287/.470
7. Ryan “DH of the Future” Lavarnway DH – .129/.182/.161
8. Mike Aviles SS – .252/.283/.389
9. Pedro Ciriaco 3B – .327/.339/.451

SP Clay Buchholz – 139.2 IP, 93 K, 45 BB, 18 HR, 4.19 ERA, 4.64 FIP, 4.42 xFIP

As a group, the nine hitters in the Red Sox’ lineup have drawn 161 walks in 2,587 plate appearances. That 6.2% walk rate would be the lowest among all Major League teams (the Royals are last at 6.6%); for the year, the Sox’ walk rate is 7.2%, tied for 25th in the majors. I can’t say for certain who, if anyone, is responsible for this change in direction, but I will note that the Red Sox were fourth in the majors in walk rate last season, and hadn’t been outside the top ten since 2002. Gee; I wonder if there were any big changes after the ’02 season that got reversed after last year…
