Game 96 recap: Jon sucked.

Sending out Lester to get shelled again and again and again was probably not wise.

Highest WPA: Adrian Gonzalez, .150
Lowest WPA: Jon Lester, -.571

And how. That was among the worst starts I’ve ever seen from a really good pitcher, and it basically breaks up any hope I had of Lester returning to form without an extended DL trip or a move to another team. I have to think that it’s going to be the former, at least right now; even if there isn’t a major issue he’s been pitching through, one has to believe that the Red Sox will come up with SOME reason to sit him down for a couple of weeks rather than send him out for his next scheduled start, especially considering that it would be against the Yankees.

If one was so inclined, one could piece together a few positives from this disaster. Gonzalez and Ellsbury both homered, which is nice. Ciriaco made an out in his lone plate appearance, knocking his line that much closer to reality. And, if you’re a fan of teams reaping what they sow, then there is something to be said for “team overreacts to freaky collapse by letting smart GM walk and handing over control to power-mad fool” being met with “Congratulations, moron; you’re .500 through 96 games and get to play the two best teams in baseball, back to back, on the road.”

Fuck this season.

What I really enjoy is that readers can’t be entirely certain which power-mad fool you’re referring to – the one who made Theo’s life hell, or the one whose dickishness drove Youk out of town.

I should probably edit the post to say “power-mad foolS.”
