I wonder if Bobby Valentine is familiar with the notion that it’s a bad idea to stack lefthanded batters one after another. Granted, the Red Sox only have two righties whose bats are worth anything right now, but why not hit Middlebrooks second and Ross fourth, just to make it that much harder in the late game?

Oh well. At least he’s temporarily over the idea of batting Ciriaco second. And with the entire outfield healthy and active for the first time all season, there’s almost no chance that he puts Podsednik back in the leadoff spot.

Tonight also marks the return of Carl Crawford. After dealing with Sox fans’ typical politeness and racial sensitivity on his rehab assignment, and then all but buying an ad in the Globe saying “ownership’s making me come back even though I need surgery,” I’m rooting for him. I may be the only one left, but damn it, I’m rooting for him.

Lastly, Brent Lillibridge is gone, cast into the ether to make room for Crawford on the roster. He had all of 16 plate appearances with the Red Sox, collecting two hits and being awful in the other 14. Actually, he was awful in all of them, cause awful players get hits too (as evidence of this, remember that Mike Aviles hit a home run last night). Those 16 PA were totally worth trading away Kevin Youkilis and playing Mauro Fucking Gomez at third base while Middlebrooks was hurt.
