Game 88 preview: Raise the white flag

I have no earthly idea what has motivated this lineup. There is no logic, there are no words…just look at it.

1. Jacoby Ellsbury CF – .194/.286/.258
2. Pedro Ciriaco 2B – .625/.647/.750
3. David Ortiz DH – .313/.410/.616
4. Cody Ross RF – .262/.343/.535
5. Will Middlebrooks 3B – .291/.328/.526
6. Mike Aviles SS – .261/.285/.412
7. Kelly Shoppach C – .269/.358/.527
8. Brent Lillibridge 1B – .162/.213/.176
No, seriously, Brent Lillibridge is our first baseman. Really. I swear.
9. Daniel Nava LF – .270/.386/.420

SP Clay Buchholz – 86.1 IP, 58 K, 34 BB, 15 HR, 5.53 ERA, 5.44 FIP, 4.69 xFIP

Adrian Gonzalez has a stiff back, and because we just HAD to get rid of Kevin Youkilis (.340/.429/.547 in Chicago, since you asked), there’s no competent person to take his place. The execrable Gomez is being sent down to AAA to make room for Buchholz, Punto hurt his leg last night, and even dregs of the 40-man like Lars Anderson can’t be called up because Brent Fucking Lillibridge has to have a roster spot.

And even if Lillibridge has to have a roster spot, there’s no reason for him to be in the lineup. I’ve made no secret of how I dislike seeing Jarrod Saltalamacchia get at bats against lefthanded pitching, but come on. When the alternative is BRENT FUCKING LILLIBRIDGE, I’m okay with seeing Salty in there against the southpaw.

Of course, this is all moot, since David Price is awesome and would tear through whatever lineup we ran out there. But just because Bobby got dealt a bad hand doesn’t mean he’s excused for trying to double down on the river and then telling the dealer to go fish.
