Game 86 recap: .500, here we are!

RIP Scott Atchison's career as a useful reliever, 2012-2012

Highest WPA: Pedro Ciriaco, .118
Lowest WPA: Jon Lester, -.280

WPA can be misleading sometimes, but Lester very obviously deserved his “award” tonight. After all, what kind of terrible pitcher walks TWO batters (and hits one!!!) while only striking out SIX in less than five innings? Only a sub-replacement scrub would induce an easy double play ball in a situation where a double play would be ideal. And of course, a true ace would never throw a pitch right down the middle of the plate where Jarrod Saltalamacchia couldn’t catch it, allowing the routine fly ball that followed to score a run instead of causing no damage at all.

The break could not come at a better time. We might or might not have some content over the next four days, but rest assured that the pain train will get back rolling on Friday night, when hopefully the Red Sox remember that their true talent still is better than a .500 team.
