Game 82 recap: My kingdom for runs

It will stun you to learn that Mauro Gomez did nothing productive.

Highest WPA: David Ortiz, .119
Lowest WPA: Aaron Cook, -.175

Believe it or not, there are people out there who will tell you that the Red Sox have a good offense. There’s got to be a point at which that comes true, or at which people stop saying it. Hopefully one of them happens soon.

Ellsbury and Crawford will be back soon. Returning to the friendly, tighter confines of Fenway Park will help. But right now, the Red Sox’ offense consists of David Ortiz, Jarrod Saltalamacchia and a bunch of guys who either suck or are underperforming.

The 2012 Red Sox are 2nd in the league in runs per game. The claim that they have a good offense is based on that full-season sample and/or the ideal depth chart, not the recently high use of AAA talent. If Middlebrooks is indeed repeating the Pedroia injury cycle, and Pedroia is finally going to admit he isn’t going to get better without surgery, don’t worry – you won’t hear anyone call the offense good for a while.

  1. No trackbacks yet.
